Biblical viewpoint on abortion
Something I find distastefully ironic is that we live in a society where we supposedly condemn murder and violence yet we condone abortion! The young life is jeopardised and mutilated whilst we argue over who has the right to butcher the young life!
I have seen footage of how a young foetus is aborted and I can tell you that
those with even the strongest constitution will find it nauseating, disturbing and simply wrong. I have also seen two young foetus specimens in jars of water. I was able to see their fingers and toes etc. and if those two were living there is no way my conscience would permit me to abort them.
The mother may argue that she has the right to choose because it is her child. True she is carrying and providing it with the required nutrients but if the same child popped out her womb would she argue the same? Has society progressed considering the Spartans would examine a baby after birth and if there were noticeable defects they would abandon it? Does a foetus feel pain? Why not carefully observe footage of an unborn being aborted and I think you will be able to make a decision pretty soon!
So what is the biblical viewpoint on abortion? Obviously there isn't a list of direct quotes on the subject yet there is sufficient guidance contained in scripture. We are probably familiar with Psalm 139:13 'for You formed my inward parts, You covered me in my mother's womb.' In Jeremiah 1 verse 5 we read 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you.' Also let us not forget that when Elizabeth met Mary the babe leapt in her mother's womb for joy. (There was obviously a spiritual connection there!) Hypothetically speaking would you be willing to abort John the Baptist or Jesus who died for your sins so we don't have to? Or are you trying to play God?
Some people will say not everything is written in black and white, what about rape. This must be treated extremely sensitively. In that instance obviously the utmost sympathy, love and support should be given to both the mother and child. Having said that it is simply not right to butcher the baby before it is born!
Often we argue over whether it is the mother or father's right to abort the child. What about the young child that isn't able to speak yet? I wonder what they would say? How illogical is it to remove the viewpoint of the child in question by killing it instead?
Everywhere we go we hear about my rights this and that etc. What rights do we read about in scripture? I am aware that it is written 'But as many as received Him to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.(John 1:12) I am not aware of many other rights we truly have. The above right is only by God's grace.
The Bible teaches that when we have repented, believe in Him and received Him into our lives, we are adopted by Him into His family. Ephesians 2:3 is quite clear that we were formerly children of wrath. By His saving grace though, for those who believe we have the right to be called children of God! Amen! |
