How to Know God
Knowing God is easy, once you know how...
God created us to be in a relationship with Him (he talks to us, we talk to Him). But unfortunately this relationship has been broken by us. We broke the relationship when we
sinned (told a lie, stole something etc) and therefore our lines of communication with God have been severed.
But God, being the loving person He is, has already taken the necessary steps for this relationship to be restored.
Where we're at
Man can't communicate with God because there's a barrier between us, it stops us from being heard.
The Bible teaches...
(Isaiah 59:2) "But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear."
(Romans 3:23) "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
What next?
It's not good to be separated from the giver of life.
(Hebrews 9:27) "Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgement."
(2 Thessalonians 1:8-9) "Those who do not know God... will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord."
And the solution?
The Bible teaches...
(1 Timothy 2:5) "For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ."
(1 Peter 3:18) "For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God."
(Romans 5:8) "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Jesus is Gods chosen way to a restored relationship
The Bible teaches...
(John 14:6) "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
(John 1:12) "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."
(Romans 10:9) "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
(Revelation 3:20) "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me."
If you want to know, how to know God, then you've got to ask Jesus into your life, this is Gods provision and the only route back to Him.
How to Know God
(John 14:14) Jesus said, "You may ask Me for anything in my name, and I will do it."
Basically we ask God back into our lives, we realise we've been sinning (lying, stealing, adultry, lust, blaspheming etc) and ask God to forgive us and to restore the relationship. We ask from our hearts, with the intention that we will not sin again, we ask Jesus to come back into our lives.
How to pray and what to pray
I think it's important we firstly realise who we're talking with - God isthe Creator of life, the most powerful andintelligent being there is - Heholds your life in His hands! Therefore we should be respectful of who He is and come to Him humbly and with sincerity. To do this it is best to go to a quiet place where you will be alone, kneel (if you can) and pray (talk) to Jesus from your heart.
Talk out loud and ask Him to forgive you of your sins and ask Him to come into your life. The following prayer will give you an idea of what you could say..
Dear Jesus,
I am very sorry that I have sinned against you and against God, please forgive me (confess anything in particular you need forgiveness of). Please come into my life and restore the broken relationship. I would like to know you and I am prepared to turn from all sin and to follow you for the rest of my days. Thank you Jesus, Amen.
Restored relationship
If you've prayed to Jesus (from your heart) and asked Him into your life, then He has adopted you into His family, you are now a child of God and the relationship has been restored. Whats more, He has forgiven all your sins and given you eternal life. You will probably find this hard to believe and won't feel as though anything has happened, but it has. God moves in the spiritual realms, and you have just been transfered from the Kingdom of Darkness to the Kingdom of Light. As time passes you will realise God working in your life and know that something did change.
(Romans 10:13) "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
(1 John 5:11-12) "God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life."
(Ephesians 2:8-9) "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith.... and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God... not by works, so that no one can boast."
Developing the relationship
As we've been so used to living without God, we need to un-learn the old ways. And re-learn new ways. We can take the following steps to start this process:
- Get a Bible and read it every day
- Talk to God in prayer, every day
- Find a good church, where we can worship and meet with Him
